Advantages of Mail Slot

Residential mail slots are an excellent choice for people who live in areas where they are available and can prove to be very, very convenient. With a mail slot, you don't need to put on winter clothing to avoid freezing on your way to the corner mail slot. Elderly homeowners avoid the chance of falling down on icy steps.

Mailboxes are a direct mailable option, but the nostalgic benefits are significant. They offer a higher level of security that postal or wall-mounted mailboxes can't provide. Once your mail arrives at your house, no one can take it away. And they're cheaper than standard mailboxes that must meet postal standards.

How to make it more secure

The truth is that for all their benefits, front door mail slots can also be a shortcut for thieves to open your door. To make your own door locks more secure, we recommend a few ways to reinforce them.

Install a mail slot cover

Don't have the budget for a new door package? Consider covering your mail slots to reduce the risk of luring in intruders. You can go to your local hardware store, cut a thick piece of metal and drill holes in the door to cover it, or have someone else cut a piece of wood to make a plug for your mail slot.

Whichever method you use, you should make sure that the inside and outside of the door's mail slot is covered so that thieves can't pry it open from the outside and sneak in. Make it weatherproof and add to your home's heating and cooling efficiency by adding a layer of insulation between the plug or lid.

Consider a smart lock

Smart locks give you and your family keyless access to your home and keep intruders out. You can find smart locks with latches and locking mechanisms, such as keypads. With all the controls of a mobile lock, you can lock and unlock your home from anywhere.

Vent Diverter

Vent diverters control the airflow coming out of the vents, but they can also be an inexpensive and effective way to help prevent burglars from invading your space. Place a plastic shatterproof diverter on top of the mail slot on the inside of the door. This will stop thieves from reaching upward with their hands or wire devices.

With A Mailbox Cover

There are covers specifically designed for mailboxes. These can help provide the same or better protection as a ventilated commutator, but are usually more expensive. That's because mail slot covers are usually made of metal rather than plastic and provide a stronger material to deter thieves.

Covering the Mail Slot with Tape

This is a very quick fix, and not something you should do for a long time. If you don't have time to immediately repair the mail slot or front door security, you can put a piece of cardboard, metal or plastic on the inside of the mail slot.

Use something sturdy like gorilla tape and make sure to take out a mailbox because the carrier can't install anything through the slot. Using duct tape is not the most reliable solution, but it will get the job done in a pinch.

Repositioning Mail Slots

If you don't want to give up the mailbox on the door and don't want to install a spare latch, then you must worry about the slot's position relative to the lock. It should not be aligned with the knob or the door. Otherwise, you run the risk that a potential thief could use the mail slot to reach out and unlock the lock. Place the slot lower to the floor and in the middle of the door or on the side opposite the lock.
