Cigarette Smoke: To date, 7,000 chemical compounds have been identified in cigarette smoke, including about 250 harmful and 69 carcinogenic chemicals. The USA Comprehensive Smoking Education Act of 1984 and the Comprehensive Smokeless Tobacco Health Education Act of 1986 mandated for the first time that manufacturers of cigarettes share the ingredients used in their products. Up until this time, tobacco companies were secretive about what was in cigarettes and smokeless tobacco and answered to no one.

Ingredient lists of specific cigarette brands were not shared due to manufacturers’ proprietary recipes.
