My criteria for selecting the safest laundry products are similar to those I use in selecting the rest of my products. However, due to the fact that these products aren’t being applied directly to our skin, I feel I can be a little less stringent in what I deem acceptable. But on the other hand I feel the environmental impact of these products is greater than say, the effect of ingredients in a face cream we might choose for ourselves. Many people use minimal personal care products, but since laundry is something many of us do every day, or at least several times/week over decades of our life I truly feel what we choose does have a definite impact on our environment. Our wastewater ends up going somewhere. You won’t find top, conventional name brands on this list. The focus is what those of us trying to make more natural solutions are finding and choosing where we shop. The brands below were requested for me to look into from my Eco-Friendly USA Group Page. It drives me batty that if you search “organic laundry detergent” you will see brands such as Seventh Gen and many others that WANT you to believe they’re organic, but I assure you they are far from it.
Here are a few criteria I really value and look for when finding my top recommendations in this category: Made in USA, the most minimal amount of plastic use as possible, refills are awesome, organic and/or all-natural ingredients: all important to me. But then the caveat is: the products need to work too! Something can have amazing ingredients, but if you’re not happy with how it performs, it doesn’t matter. Our machine type, water type, expectations, all play a huge part in that. I have only used a few of the below options personally and will comment when that is the case. It would be FANTASTIC if you comment below this post if you have tried any of these and what your experience was. Personally, I do not have luck with pods, either in my washer or dishwasher. They just do not dissolve, I don’t know why. I’ve also never tried any of the laundry sheets. I’d love to hear from some of you who have!
When I looked into the suggested brands, I always went for the scent-free option to gauge their base recipe. Many of the brands do have scented options available. Some use only natural scents, some use synthetic and natural. I do not use, or recommend, synthetically scented products. But I tried to focus on the base recipes and leave it up to you to look into the fragrances if you’d like to go that route.
Budget is a huge concern too. As I just mentioned, while we can choose not to wear expensive make-up, perfume, etc, opting out of laundry really isn’t possible. There has never been a time in my life that I haven’t been on a budget. So I include cost/load in my stats below too. Many of the brands offer a variety of sizes and typically the larger the size you’re buying, the more cost savings you’ll see. So I generally went for the smallest size available when including the price/load cost. **Note on usage. When figuring out the price/load, of course it depends on how much you use per load, whether you have an HE or standard machine, how dirty your clothes are, etc. So when calculating cost/load I generally went with what they suggest on their website as a standard load. Some people might use double or triple that amount, some might use half. So just take the numbers with a bit of a grain of salt, they’re a base number.
Environmental concerns. There are a few ingredients that are an absolute NO for me and send a product straight to my NOT RECOMMENDED list, and they include: Benzisothiazolinone, Methylisothiazolinone, Methylchloroisothiazolinone. In addition to being very common allergen triggers (which is more of a concern for products you’re coming into contact with like dish soap) they carry the concern of acute aquatic toxicity as an environmental implication. Manufacturers say: well, it’s only a tiny amount per product. True. But when millions of people are doing millions of loads daily, 365 days/year, decade after decade…. Enough said. I encourage you to ditch any/all products that you see include these ingredients on the label. You will find them in liquid products as a preservative. Many laundry options are powdered, which does make it easier to avoid preservatives which are often some of the ingredients of most concern. Potassium sorbate and sodium benzoate I really try to avoid in food or personal care, but I don’t consider them as much of a concern with laundry products.
On EWG cleaning database scores: as always I take them with a grain of salt. It’s a good reference, a good start. But I ALWAYS check out the full ingredient list, not just their overall score. They will give an A score, but when you click the product, sometimes ½ the ingredients get a C. So that matters to me. What those ingredients are and why they get a C, even though they ultimately give the product an A, is what matters. And I use PubChem a lot when researching a new to me ingredient, it is fascinating and a wealth of info!
All that being said, let’s look at what I found. Please forgive any weird formatting. I did so much copy/pasting from each site and at some point I just have to stop worrying about formatting. I want to present the info, and my opinion, without staring at a screen any longer ???? Here it is:
Recommended: Best-of-the-Best
MamaSuds- $22/ 64oz $.34/load. Ingredients: water, potassium olivate (saponified olive oil), sodium carbonate, and sodium borate
**I love lists of minimal ingredients when they are still effective. My personal experience was that I felt 2 oz worked better than 1 (in my top-loading, non-HE machine). So that is only 32 loads/ 64 oz jug, making it costly at $.50/load. However, as I LOVE that she offers a concentrated refill pouch which uses less plastic, and is a bit cheaper at $18 for 64 oz. Again, obviously if you need to use less soap, the cost will fluctuate greatly. I see she has a brand new laundry powder! I’ll add my thoughts on that after I try it, but ingredients look great: Ingredients: sodium carbonate, sodium percarbonate, and sodium olivate (saponified olive oil)

Meliora- $20.99/128 loads= $16/load Ingredients: Sodium bicarbonate (baking soda), sodium carbonate (washing soda), vegetable soap [sodium cocoate, glycerin, organic cocos nucifera (coconut) oil, water].
**I have never used this, but the ingredients look great!
—————————————————————–
Molly’s Suds Original Powder $14.99/70 loads=$.21/load
Ingredients: Sodium Carbonate, Sodium Bicarbonate, Magnesium Sulfate (Heptahydrate), Unrefined Sea Salt, Essential Oil(s) and/or 100% Natural Fragrance(s)*
**I used this for many years and offered it via my buying club. It contains minimal ingredients that are not concerning and I felt it worked well. It also has a reasonable cost/load.
Unscented Super Powder Ingredients: Sodium Carbonate, Sodium Bicarbonate, Sea Salt, Disodium Lauryl Sulfosuccinate, Active Enzymes
**I remember when she 1st came out with the Super Powder I wasn’t thrilled with the addition of Disodium Lauryl Sulfosuccinate. However, I did spend quite a bit of time reviewing the info on it and it is not suspected to be an environmental toxin, be persistent or bioaccumulative in the environment, nor is it expected to be potentially toxic or harmful to our bodies. And after looking at lots and lots of other formulas, I appreciate the minimal ingredient list so feel fine about recommending this with no concerns.
———————————–
Poofy Organics– $30/64oz $.47/load.
Ingredients: Organic Saponified Coconut Oil, Organic Saponified Olive Oil, Organic Saponified Jojoba Oil, Sodium Bicarbonate, Glycerin, & Rosemary Extract. Dislike plastic jug
**I truly have not laid eyes on a smaller, more organic ingredient list for this category. And I have personally used this product as I have been a Poofy Organics Guide for almost 11 years now. I had been urging them to come up with a safe offering for this category for years because I truly want Poofy to be a one-stop shop. So, this was a long time in the making! And I’m thrilled to say, it works really well! It is fantastic. Downside=cost. At $.47/load it is one of the more expensive ones on this list. However, I have heard from others who use a ½ oz instead of 1, so obviously if that works for you, that cuts your cost in ½ to $.23. Like all things Poofy Organics offers, it’s hard to find a safer ingredient list. They truly offer THE best of THE best of the best. If cost wasn’t a concern, I would never look for any alternatives!
Shop during one of the 3 sitewide sales/year to bring cost down. Save 15% during Earth Day, Labor Day, Black Friday. You can check out all Poofy’s laundry offerings here. Rosey by Thrive, Free & Clear powder- $9.99/70 loads= $.14/load
Sodium Carbonate, Sodium Sulfate, Sodium Chloride, Sodium Carbonate Peroxide, Sodium Citrate, Protease Enzyme.
**Nothing concerning, great value, plastic pouch not a jug! I’ve not tried this myself.
——————————————
Rowe Casa, unscented powder- $17/50 loads- $.34/load
Ingredients: SODIUM CARBONATE (SUPER WASHING SODA), SODIUM BICARBONATE (BAKING SODA), SODIUM PERCARBONATE, SODIUM TALLOWATE (ORGANIC SOAP FLAKES).
**Minimal ingredients with no concern!
**I’m writing them to get more info on their liquid formula. They’re not fully disclosing what is in it, I’ll update this after I get a response: UNSCENTED INGREDIENTS: PLANT SUGAR (DERIVED FROM COCONUTS), DISTILLED WATER, ORGANIC VEGETABLE GLYCERIN, FERMENTED SUGAR (DERIVED FROM BEETS), SODIUM BICARBONATE.
——————————————
Tangie- $23/128 oz. I use 2 oz/load cost/load for me is $.36.
Ingredients: Coconut Oil, Olive Oil, Soap Nuts Liquid, Saponified Lye, Yucca Powder, Sodium Carbonate, Baking Soda, Oxalic Acid, Salt, Rosemary Oleoresin.
**LOVE: that it is a concentrated bar that you dissolve in water so there is NO waste! This is my top choice! It’s what I have used for many years and will continue to use due to it being more affordable than Poofy’s, and no plastic jug which I absolutely LOVE!!

Zum Liquid Laundry $12/32 loads= $.38/load (64 oz is $18). 5 ingredients water, potassium cocoate (saponified 100% coconut oil), sodium bicarbonate (baking soda), fragrance (essential oils & fragrance) and glycerin (vegetable glycerin)
**No ingredients of concern. It is in a plastic jug. I’ve not tried it.
SO-SO. Not terrible, not the best-of-the-best either
9 elements- unscented- 95% plant based. $12.97/ 35 loads= $.20/load via Walmart (only spot it linked me to purchase).
WATER, CITRIC ACID, C12-16 PARETH, SODIUM C10-16 ALKYLBENZENESULFONATE, PROPYLENE GLYCOL, SODIUM CITRATE, VINEGAR.
**SODIUM C10-16 ALKYLBENZENESULFONATE is a synthetic surfactant that gets a C from EWG due to ‘some’ high chronic toxicity and impurity concerns. Overall I don’t think it’s concerning enough to be in my absolutely not recommended group, but I don’t love it either. So-So at best. Scented uses synthetic fragrance.
——————————–
Attitude, Unscented- $19.95/40 loads (plastic jug)= $.50/load. Made in Canada.
Ingredients: 5-15% anionic surfactants, (Sodium Coco-Sulfate), 5-15% non-ionic surfactants (Lauryl Glucoside, Myristyl Glucoside, Caprylyl Glucoside),Water, Citric Acid, Sodium Chloride, Sodium Gluconate, Sodium Benzoate, Potassium Sorbate, Glycerin, Camellia Sinensis (Tea) Leaf Extract.
**I love that they offer larger sizes in cardboard refills (with a plastic bladder inside, much like a box of wine). I wish it were made in the USA, but it’s definitely not terrible.
———————————————-
Blueland- laundry detergent tablet refills $21/60 tablets= $.35/load
Ingredients: Sodium Carbonate, Citric Acid, Microcrystalline Cellulose, Lauryl / Myristyl Glucoside, Subtilisin, Fragrance (natural/synthetic), Amylase, Water/Aqua, Maltodextrin, Mannanase, Hydrated Silica, Monosodium Citrate, Cellulase, Magnesium Stearate (Synthetic)
**Fragrance-free available. Love the paper pouches and plastic-free concept with refills. They’re certainly not terrible, but not “clean” enough to be on my best of the best list either.
—————————————
Dirty Labs, scent-free detergent- $16/32 loads= $.50/load.
Ingredients: Lauryl glucoside (-47-9), Water (-18-5), Caprylyl/Capryl glucoside (-73-1), Glycerine (56-81-5), Capryloyl/Caproyl methyl glucamide (-62-5), Coconut fatty acid (-47-4), Protease (Subtilisin) (aep) (-01-1), Sodium citrate (-04-3), Potassium hydroxide (-58-3), Propanediol (504-63-2), Alpha-Amylase (aep) (-90-2), Cellulase (aep) (-54-8), Mannanase (-54-3), Pectate lyase (-75-2), Sodium hydroxide (-73-2), Propylene glycol (57-55-6).
**I like that they offer refill bottles. They use a combo of natural/synthetic fragrances. None of the ingredients are hugely concerning. Typcially Propylene Glycol is something I would avoid in personal care, but for a product like this it doesn’t have huge concerns.
—————————————
Ecos pods= $.26/load via Amazon.
Ingredients: Sodium Sulfate (mineral-based builder), Sodium Carbonate (mineral-based water softener), Sodium Bicarbonate (mineral-based stain remover), Sodium Coco-Sulfate (plant-derived surfactant), Polyvinyl Alcohol (water-soluble coating), Enzymatic Blend (stain remover).
**Better than their powder or sheets that I looked at (and placed down below in the not recommended section). However, pods do not work well for me in the washer or dishwasher.
———————————
Laundry Lady Co- Fragrance Free Laundry Sheets- $23.99 60 sheets= $.40/load
Ingredients: SODIUM DODECYL SULFATE, DECYL GLUCOSIDE, COCAMIDOPROPYL BETAINE, GLYCEROL, FATTY ALCOHOL POLYGLYCOL ETHER, WATER, POLY (VINYL ALCOHOL), TRISODIUM CITRATE.
**SODIUM DODECYL SULFATE is a synonym for sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) which gets a C via EWG and is something I prefer to avoid. However, of all the laundry sheets I looked at this one has the most minimal ingredients and nothing of huge, huge concern. I don’t love them, but they’re not awful either. So-So at best.
———————————————————-
Truly Free- $19.95/50 loads= $.40/load
Ingredients: TetraSodium Salt , Sodium Polyacrylate , Sodium Carbonate , Sodium Lauryl Sulfoacetate , Precipitated Silica , Lavandin Grosso-Plant Based , Eucalyptus Oil-Plant Based , Fir Needle Oil-Plant Based , Sodium Citrate , Sodium Cocoate , Hypromellose , Clove Leaf Oil-Plant Based , Lime Oil-Plant Based , Sodium Dodecylbenzenesulfonate , Cinnamal (Cinnamon) , Citral (Citrus) , Coumarin (Cinnamon) , Limonene (Citrus) , Alkyl Polyglucoside , Citronellol , Eugenol (Clove Leaf Oil) , Evernia Furfuracea (Treemoss) , Evernia Prunastri (Oakmoss) , Farnesol (Lemongrass) , Geraniol (Geranium) , Citrus Aurantium Dulcis (Orange Peel Oil)

SHEETS- $14.99/70 loads= $.21/load
Ingredients: PVOH, Caprylyl/Capryl Glucoside, Cocamidopropyl Hydroxysultaine, Cocamidopropylamine Oxide, Sodium Citrate, Tetrasodium Glutamate Diacetate, Sodium Lauroyl Glutamate, Sodium Lauroyl Sarcosinate, Glycerol, Starch, Protease, Amylase, Citric Acid, Sodium Alkenyl Sulfonate.
NOT RECOMMENDED:

**Both contain too many ingredients of concern for me to be able to recommend them.

BRANCH BASICS—ethics are hugely important to me. I like to keep my feedback centered on ingredients and only ingredients. But when a company goes through a scandal such as described in the following blog post, I just can’t give them a 2nd chance. In my opinion, they don’t deserve it and nothing they can say would earn my trust. Although this was almost a decade ago, I will always keep them on my Not Recommended List. There are plenty of brands with safe options, scandals of this magnitude are non-negotiable to me in terms of my support. Charlie’s Soap- natural liquid laundry powder $20.99/100 loads= $.21/load.
Ingredients: Sodium Carbonate (497-19-8) [water softener]; C12-16 Pareth-9 (-12-2) [surfactant]; C10-14 Alcohol Ethoxylate (-15-0) [surfactant]; Sodium Metasilicate (-92-0) [drying agent]; Water (-18-5)
**The Pareth and Alcohol Ethoxylate’s carry numerous concerns (in the liquid and powder listed below). I can’t recommend these. Sodium Metasilicate gets an F via EWG’s cleaning database, that’s saying a lot. They don’t give many ingredients an F!
Liquid detergent $20.99/100loads= $.21/load
Ingredients: Water (-18-5); C12-16 Pareth-9 (-12-2) [surfactant]; C10-14 Alcohol Ethoxylate (-15-0) [surfactant]; Sodium Carbonate (497-19-8 ) [water softener]

Clean People Laundry Strips- $33/ 96 loads= $.34/load- made in Canada
Ingredients: Starch, PVA, Vegetable Glycerin, Sodium C14-16 Olefin Sulfonate, Glycereth-6 Cocoate, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Caprylyl/Capryl Glucoside, Lauryl Glucoside, Sodium Gluconate, Propylene Glycol Dicaprylate/Dicaprate, Potassium Sorbate, Residual Water
*Fresh & Clean contains fragrance
**I love the idea of strips, there are just too many ingredients in here that are not great. I can’t recommend these. Also not made in USA.
———————————————————–
Doterra- $48/ up to 64 loads= $.75/load. They do have wholesale pricing which is cheaper ($36), I’m assuming that’s the distributor price. But this is by far the most expensive of all the options I looked at. This product aligns with my general, overall feelings about this brand: WAY overpriced, and lack of disclosure, making it a brand I do not recommend.
SUPER frustrating. Under ingredients on the main page it lists 5 EO’s. That’s it. I found a Product Information tab, I also don’t see a complete list there. It says: contains. I emailed them for a complete list and had this response:
: Thank you for your regarding the On Guard Laundry Detergent. We understand how important it is to know what’s in the products you use. While our full formula is proprietary, we can share a few ingredient highlights: The ingredients are listed below.
Surfactants: Naturally derived for effective cleaning. For example, Caprylyl/Capryl Glucoside is sourced from coconuts.
Enzyme Blend: On Guard Laundry Detergent includes bio-based enzymes Protease, Amylase, Cellulase, Mannanase, and Lipase, which help break down stains and enhance cleaning performance.
On Guard Protective Blend: Wild Orange, Clove, Cinnamon, Eucalyptus, and Rosemary essential oils combine to create a powerful blend with surface cleaning properties.
**I can’t recommend anything if I don’t know what’s in it. Proprietary recipes with highlights aren’t good enough to make an informed decision.
———————————————————-
Ecos- $11.48/120 loads= $.10 via Amazon
Free & Clear: Water, Cocamidopropyl Betaine (plant-derived surfactant), Cocamidopropylamine Oxide (plant-derived surfactant), Sodium Coco-Sulfate (plant-derived surfactant), Phenoxyethanol (preservative), Sodium Citrate (plant-derived water softener), Caprylyl Glycol (plant-derived preservative), Sodium Formate (enzyme stabilizer), Enzymatic Blend (stain remover), Sodium Hydroxide (mineral-based pH adjuster)
**Both the Cocamidopropyl’s and the Sodium Coco-Sulfate carry concerns such as: High chronic toxicity to aquatic life, severe burns and eye damage, acute oral toxicity, known to cause cancer, probably carcinogenic. Those ingredients, combined with phenoxyethanol make me not feel its worthy of being recommended. I like that the laundry sheets below are an option that avoids the big plastic jug, but there are just too many ingredients of concern to be able to recommend them.
Free & Clear Laundry Detergent Sheets: ~$.30/sheet via Amazon
Water (solvent), Polyvinyl Alcohol (polymer), Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (plant-derived surfactant), Kaolin (mineral-based builder), Caprylyl/Capryl Glucoside (plant-derived surfactant), Silica (mineral-based builder), Cocamidopropyl Betaine (plant-derived surfactant), Glycerin (plant-derived solvent), Sodium Citrate (plant-derived water softener), Cocamidopropylamine Oxide (plant-derived surfactant), Phenoxyethanol (preservative), Dimethicone (polymer), Saponins (plant-derived surfactant), Citric Acid (plant-derived pH adjuster), Protease Enzyme Blend (enzyme stain remover)

Melapower by Melaleuca- I’ve not ever seen anything from Melaleuca I’d use or recommend. However, I cannot even find the ingredients for this product on their website. I’d be happy to share my thoughts about what’s in it if someone can get me an ingredient list. I will share these thoughts on the brand overall though: Re-blogging my post on Melaleuca, THE definition of GREENWASHING! | Eco-Friendly Mama: Safe product recommendations with a focus on organic and Made in USA!
—————————————————–
Nellie’s Laundry Soda- $12.60/50 loads= $2.25/load
Ingredients: Soda, ash, linear alcohol ethoxylate, sodium chloride, sodium metasilicate.
This is a great example of how EWG drives me insane sometimes. This product gets an A overall in EWG’s Cleaning Database. However, if you look at the Sodium Metasilicate scores an F in EWG with concerns such as: causes severe burns and eye damage, may cause respiratory irritation, and it has moderate acute toxicity to aquatic life. Alcohol Ethoxylate scores a C, but when you look at the concerns, they are VERY serious: may cause genetic defects, may cause cancer, known to cause cancer, known to cause reproductive toxicity to females, reasonably anticipated to be a human carcinogen. It is on CA’s Prop 65 list. What in the actual?!?! How does EWG give this product an A overall? I can’t recommend.
————————————
Oasis Biocompatible Super-concentrated Laundry Liquid (via Amazon, wasn’t available directly) $35/128 loads= $.27/load
Ingredients: Water, Alcohols C12-15 ethoxylated, Alcohols, C9-11 ethoxylated, Benzenesulfonic Acid, C10-16 alkyl, Potassium Hydroxide, Potassium Chloride, Benzisothiazolinone, Methylisothiazolinone, Methylchloroisothiazolinone, Limonene.
**A definite no on this one. It has not 1, but 3 of the nastiest, most harsh preservatives that send a brand to my not recommended list instantly. This is the worst of all I looked at (that fully discloses what’s in it)
—————————————-
Rockin Green- $22.99/ 90 loads= $.26/load
Ingredients: sodium carbonate, sodium percarbonate, natural chelating agents, sodium sulfate, biodegradable surfactants, natural fragrance oils. Surfactant: It is a proprietary coconut-derived biodegradable surfactant between 16-23%
**I can’t recommend any product that doesn’t offer full disclosure. The surfactant probably isn’t awful, but if they’re not going to tell me what they’re using, I’m not going to use or recommend it.
——————————————-
Rosey by Thrive, liquid free & clear- $9.99/100 loads= $.10/load
Water (Aqua), Laureth-7 (Plant-Derived Cleaning Agent), Sodium Methyl-2 Sulfolaurate (Plant-Derived Cleaning Agent), Disodium 2-Sulfolaurate (Plant-Derived Cleaning Agent), Sodium Bicarbonate (Mineral-Based pH Adjuster), Sodium Chloride (Mineral-Based Viscosity Modifier), Methyl Soyate (Plant-Derived Cleaning Agent), Cocamidopropyl PG-Dimonium Chloride Phosphate (Plant-Derived Cleaning Agent), Cocamidopropyl Hydroxysultaine (Plant-Derived Cleaning Agent).
**Cheap but Laureth-7 carries a high concern of acute aquatic toxicity, concerns this ingredient might cause genetic defects, cancer, reproductive toxicity. Cocamidopropyl’s aren’t fantastic either.
Alternate suggestion that I’m not familiar with:
Laundry ozone machine- from the person who suggested it: It has worked well for us so far. The only thing I’m curious about is if it will work well in the summer time – we live where it gets really hot so even the water in the pipes gets warm. Ozone works best in cold water. But yes, I’ve maybe only used laundry detergent 5 times in the last 6 months.
************That’s it so far. Do you have a brand that you’d like to see on this list? Comment below. Also please comment if you’ve used any of these and share your thoughts on how well they work, or don’t!!

I originally shared a review of MamaSuds products in May of , so I’m calling this an updated version. That review included my thoughts on her liquid laundry soap and her castile soap. If my memory is right those were the only 2 products she was making at the time, the roots of her business. In the past 10+ years she has expanded her line quite a bit and now offers a nice selection of laundry and cleaning products. I worked with Michelle to offer MamaSuds products to my buying club for over a decade. Her products were a staple offering, and Michelle was amazing to work with.
When I saw she had a new liquid laundry concentrate in a refill pouch, I reached out to Michelle to inquire about sampling it. She sent me not just that, but very kindly offered to send me 1 of everything she makes so I could do a thorough review and share my thoughts with you. It was definitely time, I can’t believe it had been so many years since I shared my review initially!
So let’s get into the products. I always like to share a reminder that I don’t expect 100% of products to work for 100% of people that try them 100% of the time. We all have different machines, water types, and expectations on what makes an effective product. Something that works great for 1 person, might not for the next person.
I think the thing I appreciate most about these products is their simplicity. I adore short ingredient lists of things I recognize and can pronounce. MamaSuds products are based around her castile soap which is made from distilled water and saponified olive oil, that’s it! It seems more and more people are learning they have sensitives or allergies to coconut oil, or other oils commonly found in all-natural products. That’s a reminder that just because something is natural, safe, gentle for most people, there is still a possibility others might be allergic to it. When I’m asked for a brand recommendation that does not include coconut oil, this would certainly be a top choice! Of course, I do wish the olive oil was organic, but I imagine the price would make her products unaffordable for many.
A concern I do have is that I’ve read that olive oil is going to continue to go up & up in price due to drought and other factors in the areas that produce it. So I’m honestly a bit leery of products that are based off it as a major ingredient. But for MamaSuds, and all others who depend on it, I hope the prices can stay reasonable!
It made me happy to surround myself with Michelle’s products in my kitchen and laundry room for a few months, it truly was so nice to have access to her entire line to give it all a thorough test in my house. Let’s look at the products starting with the product that makes up the base of most of the rest of the products: the Castile Liquid Soap. It is available in 16oz or gallon size. When I offered MamaSuds products via the buying club, many people purchased her castile and really enjoyed the versatility it offers. I always suggested starting off with smaller sizes to sample the products before committing to a gallon. The soap really lasts a long time! Many of you might be familiar with other big name castile soap brands, 1 of which advertises theirs as an 18-in-1 soap. Castile is basically considered an all-purpose soap; you can use it for most of your soap needs.
My favorite of all her products is the dish soap bar. I started using it exclusively when I took the above pic on 10/13. It’s 1/15 as I type this, and there are still several uses left as you’ll see in the photo below. So 3 months of use! At $13 for the bar, that’s pretty reasonable for a safe dish soap! It has 1 ingredient: saponified olive oil! I have tried other dish soap bars before, and they’ve all left streaks and grime behind. MamaSuds gives a nice number of bubbles and washes really clean. For the most part, I’m handwashing pots, pans, and larger utensils. My plates, glasses, bowls are all glass and go in the dishwasher most of the time, but I do occasionally hand wash some glass and am very happy with how clean it comes out with this dish soap bar! She adds this note, and I know this advice should definitely be followed**Be sure to use a slotted soap dish, this will make the soap last longer and not get soft. Bamboo pot brush works very well too.
I love that the hand soap comes in a glass pump top and is available in lemon or unscented. I always prefer glass over plastic whenever possible. It works great, and the lemon smells great. I’m a huge fan of citrus, especially in my kitchen. It also helps cut grease. Unfortunately, the auto dish powder has never worked for me. I tried it when it 1st came out many years ago, and it just doesn’t do well with my machine and hard well water (no water softener). We have a new dishwasher since I originally tried it, my hope was maybe it would work this time around, but it doesn’t. It leaves my dishes super grimy and with a filmy coat. I even tried to add an additional small amount of citric acid which can boost cleaning power, and that didn’t help. However, I do know several people who always ordered this via the buying club when I offered it, and it works well for them. I LOVE that she offers samples for just $5, so you should definitely give it a try to see if it works for you!
Laundry: I used 1/4 cup (2 oz) oz of liquid per load in my top-loading, non-HE machine and am completely satisfied with how well the product works. We have hard well water with no softener. It is available in unscented, lavender or lemon (scented with essential oils). I used the whole 64 oz jug up 1st, then refilled it with the 16oz concentrated pouch which you add to the jug then top off with water. In addition to seeking a safe laundry product, I prefer to avoid big plastic jugs too. So while the original product is indeed a large plastic jug and the refill still comes in plastic, the refill pouch has a much smaller footprint than a big plastic jug. You could skip the jug and just order the refill pouch and mix the concentrate in a glass jar, if you wanted to avoid the large plastic jug altogether. Here are the ingredients: potassium olivate (saponified olive oil), water, sodium carbonate, and sodium borate, pure essential oil of lavender, lemon, or unscented.
She also offers a stain stick to pre-treat areas you think might stain. Again, this product is made from 1 ingredient: saponified olive oil. It’s basically the liquid soap in a stick version. It’s small, but affordable and lasts forever. I’ve used it numerous times and hardly put a dent in it. The Oxygen powder I don’t use it super regularly but like to do an extra deep clean on towels, linens and blankets periodically, so I include this on those loads. I always dissolve it in hot water first, then add it to the load after the washer has filled with water.
On to the dryer. I had a bit of sticker shock when I saw the $15 price tag on a single dryer ball. However, they are HUGE. They are about the size of 3 of my smaller dryer balls. And I love that they are made from upcycled materials. Also, they’re pretty! Pretty things make me happier when doing mundane chores like laundry ????
For the bathroom she offers her very popular toilet cleaning tabs. These were super popular during the buying club. Ingredients: sodium bicarbonate, non-GMO citric acid*, water, essential oils of tea tree, organic peppermint, and lemon. Just toss in your toilet, let fizz out and scrub clean. According to her website, the citric acid lowers the pH of bacteria, helping scrub them away. I love that she offers misfit (imperfect) tabs too! There are also other uses that she lists for them such as adding them to your diaper pal, garbage disposal, washing machine, and MORE! I love that this product is plastic-free!
Of course, the all-purpose spray cleaner can be used anywhere in your house. Ingredients are her castile soap as a base, with the addition of aloe vera gel juice and non-GMO citric acid plus a germ-fighting type blend of essential oils. I was sent the concentrate, which can make eight 16oz spray refills! I absolutely love products that are super concentrated. They cut down on shipping multiple products over time and of course reduce plastic waste!
In addition to the auto dish powder which doesn’t work well for me (but again I totally encourage you to try a sample to see if it works for you), the only other products I wasn’t a huge fan of were the bar soaps. I found them to be a bit on the soft side, even with a soap dish I just thought they didn’t last real long. While I generally do prefer bar soaps to liquids to avoid that plastic container, I do prefer her liquid castile to the solid castile bar based on my experience with my family of 4 using it and the other bar soaps sent to me. For the price, I have a hard time recommending them. Other than that, I really, truly enjoyed each & every product and find them to be a good value and absolutely have no concern with ingredients which is very refreshing to be able to say.
I love that MamaSuds offers samples and concentrates, as well as bundles for kitchen, bathroom and laundry. One of the main reasons I started my blog almost 13 years ago was to accompany my personal mission to support small, made in the USA safe, natural (and organic as much as possible) products. MamaSuds is made by a small, woman-owned & operated MI-based business. It makes me very happy to offer my support and encouragement as she slowly but surely grows her brand! These are the exact type of brands I like to use, recommend, and work with as an Affiliate. I really hope you’ll give these products a try and share your feedback with me and the group too. I always value your input!
I’m so excited to share this post with you. Without a doubt, it was one of the most incredible experiences of my life, for a variety of reasons. Here’s the short version, then I’ll go into more detail. Miladys, a massage therapist and fellow Guide at Poofy Organics, reached out to me and made an incredible offer: Jess, I want you to know the power of a full body massage using our amazing Poofy products! Most of you know I’ve been a lover of all things Poofy Organics for over a decade. I tried my 1st Poofy products 12 years ago now! I have experience with many products for everyday use, but Miladys wanted me to have an elevated experience and know the power of them on a much deeper level. Here’s the thing though: she lives in Rhode Island, I live in Wisconsin. She made an absolutely incredible offer: she would fly to me and take care of every detail of the session. I just had to show up, and bring a massage table. Luckily, my friend had one in her closet!
I suggested getting a hotel near the airport in order to keep things as easy as possible, since Miladys was already traveling so far. But she insisted that every component of the experience must be perfect, including the setting. So she found an absolutely perfect Bed & Breakfast a bit north of the Milwaukee in Two Rivers, just a couple blocks from the shore of Lake MI. I made the drive across state the day before the massage was scheduled and spent the night at the B & B as well. We were the only 2 guests that night! We had never met in person, so it was a nice opportunity to get to know each other a bit and unwind in advance of the massage we had scheduled for the following day.
We got up at 5am and headed to Lake MI to watch the sunrise. It was an absolutely beautiful day, and the perfect way to set the mood and intentions for the day.
We returned to the B & B for a lovely breakfast. It was awesome because we were the only 2 guests there at the time, we had the place to ourselves! Dawn, our host, was incredibly kind and a pleasure to chat with. She enjoyed hearing our story of why we were there. It was great to hear that she raised her kids with a natural/organic mindset too, and now as a grandmother, she was seeing those same values reflected in the way her daughter was raising her kiddos. After enjoying a cup of coffee out in the gorgeous courtyard, we enjoyed a lovely breakfast. In addition to what is pictured below, Dawn made us each an omelet with toast and let us know she always used as many organic ingredients is possible in her kitchen! It was delicious, and the setting and company was just so lovely. I was SO grateful Miladys didn’t take my advice for a hotel near the airport. The setting really was crucial in the overall experience.
After breakfast, we let my belly settle a bit and it was time for the massage. Some thoughts I had in getting ready for this experience: would an hour & half long massage feel good using cheap, ordinary, nothing special products? Yes, I’m sure it would have. But the goal Miladys had for the experience was not for it to be ‘good’, it was for it to be something I would never forget in my life. For it to be all-encompassing, intentional, transformative, elevated. And she most certainly achieved that. There were many factors that had me so incredibly excited for it. Primarily, we had it planned for months in advance. You know how it is when you have that much time for the excitement to build and then the day finally arrives?! Also, the fact that she was willing to hop on a plane from RI and come to me in WI, out of the goodness of her heart and an incredible love for her profession, completely blew me away. I kept thinking it was too good to be true, but then there I was, it was happening! It was a reminder that there are so many good, kind, generous, incredible humans out there and I’m so grateful when my path crosses with theirs.
The rooms in the B & B weren’t very large, but we moved a few things around and made space for the massage table, with enough room for Miladys to be able to move freely around.
Here are the products she brought with and used, from L to R: Magnesium Lotion, Lavender Body Lotion, Jojoba oil (only non-Poofy product), Peppermint Essential Oil, Vanilla Sugar Body Spray, Energizing Blend Solid Perfume, Man-Up Body Spray, Wood Citrus Body Spray, Eucalyptus Spearmint Sugar Scrub, Lemon Sugar Body Spray, Let it Glow Shimmer oil, RUB-OLOGY, Dead Sea Mineral Mud Mask. Reminder that Miladys flew, and didn’t check a bag, so this was all brought with her via carry-on!
I started face down on the table, with relaxing music playing quietly in the background. She let me know she was not watching any clock, time was irrelevant, it would take as long as it took to do what she wanted to do. It was a blur for me, a true time warp. When it was all said & done it was 2.5 hours of total bliss!!!! Miladys started with my head, neck & shoulders and worked her way down. The 1st product she used was RUB-OLOGY, which is similar to Icy Hot. She massaged it into my back and shoulders and it absolutely got me tingling all over- it felt incredible and really woke my body up in terms of being present, while beginning to relax at the same time. While that was soaking into my back, she rubbed the Magnesium Lotion on the back of my legs and feet. After wiping away the RUB-OLOGY she applied sugar scrub, wiped that away, then lastly applied Magnesium Lotion with Peppermint EO. Throughout the process she would spritz one of the amazing body spray scents into the air and fan it around the room. Each scent was very different, distinct, and incredible! It truly was a whole sensory experience, nothing was neglected. Miladys was constantly on the go- massaging, spritzing, but with next to no sound made, never distracting me from my state of total bliss. I had head-to-toe whole body goosebumps numerous times.
When she turned me over she massaged sugar scrub into each of my hands and feet and then wrapped them in warm washcloths which she left on while she worked on my legs and arms- it felt so good! She had every detail set up, ready to go and seamlessly went from one thing to the next. I had my eyes closed the entire time and really had no idea what was happening next, it was incredible to enjoy the different sensory experiences. My favorite spots I would have to say were my head/neck, and feet. She said she really likes to focus on the feet as they are what carry us and it makes sense that they should receive the most attention. It felt so, SO good! It was never too hard, never hurt, just right and amazing feeling. She also gave me good feedback that it was a positive sign that she was able to dig deep into my lymph node areas of my armpits, for example, and it didn’t make me uncomfortable due to tenderness or anything like that. She said in some women, she can barely touch those areas without them expressing discomfort.
The final steps were a face massage and application of mud mask onto my face. She then left the room for about 10 minutes and just let me lie there to relax and soak up all the products. After returning and washing that away, the very final step was applying the Let it Glow Shimmer Oil all over, which leaves your skin with a golden, sparkly accent. After the massage was over, I went and laid in bed for about 1/2 an hour and just let myself remain in that state of total bliss. Miladys insisted on doing all the clean-up and packing up the massage table, not letting me do a single thing! Which again, just blew me away and was not at all something I was used to!
It’s hard to describe how special this experience made me feel. It was something entirely for ME. It is so rare for me to pamper myself in any way. I’ve had two other professional massages in my life, both after an injury I was looking for relief from. To get pampered in this way, and not due to injury is something I’ve never had the pleasure of enjoying in my life. A hot bath with a bath bomb and a candle at the end of a long day is about my max level of self-care. So taking an overnight excursion, having a 4 hr. drive each way to reflect and mediate, was very powerful. Before, during, and after the experience I was absolutely bursting with a profound feeling of gratitude. As I laid there for two & a half hours, on a gorgeous Thursday afternoon near the shore of Lake MI, my mind kept wandering to all the people across the world who weren’t so fortunate. The daily world news is full of stories of war, violence, ugly politics of all sorts. So many people suffering all over the world. Yet here I was, being pampered. And I do not take such privilege for granted. I literally felt like I could burst from gratitude. And that’s my biggest takeaway from the entire experience: GRATITUDE. I’m grateful for others who believe in paying it forward when they are blessed enough to have something to share. I’m inspired to do the same myself. I’m grateful for Poofy Organics products, and the connections I’ve made with others who share similar values that led them to Poofy too.
Afterwards we went and found a lakeside restaurant where we enjoyed lunch and more wonderful conversation before I made the 4 hr. drive back home to my family.
At Poofy Organics, our mantra for has been ELEVATE. And I want to thank Miladys, from the bottom of my heart, for thinking outside of the box and helping elevate these products that I already knew and loved, to a whole new level. At Poofy, it’s not *just* about the products. It’s also about building relationships. Both with customers, but also with our fellow Guides. I’ve met other Guides while traveling across the U.S. It is a fact that those of us who represent Poofy Organics as Guides are very, very passionate about the products. What I loved about connecting with Miladys was the obvious passion for her profession as a massage therapist combined with her passion for using the best and safest products on the market. She sees Poofy products as therapeutic, medicinal almost, in the role they play in the massage. And this whole experience most certainly helped open my eyes to each of these products being more than *just* a lotion, spray, scrub. It made me think deeper about each ingredient hand selected to make these amazing products into their final form. About the organic farmers growing the crop to make the ingredient that made the finished product. How so many things must fall into place, dependent on each component, in order to bring just one product to us. And that is something I will never take for granted. I urge you to do the same. Next time you’re applying a body lotion, stop and think about it. Was it mass-produced by machines, made with ingredients that were sprayed with who knows how many chemicals? Or was it made by hand, by a small business, with organic ingredients selected for their beneficial properties? The latter is the peace of mind that comes along with products made by Poofy Organics.

THANKS FOR READING!!!!
Oh. My. Gooooooodness, I’m incredibly happy to report that I completed looking at every, single brand on my personal care/cleaning lists yesterday after ~8 months of chipping away at it (there are 155 brands there currently)! The last update to these lists was in . That was the 3rd revision since I initially shared them almost a decade ago. Between and I was so burned out from researching and blogging that I pretty much walked away from it all completely. And the idea of refreshing this project was way too overwhelming for a really long time. I don’t get paid to do this, it truly is something I’ve always done altruistically. There were times I acknowledged it needed to be done, but if I felt like I had to make myself sit down and do it didn’t happen. The desire had to come from within.
At the end of last year I had a renewed desire to work on this project. While it did feel completely overwhelming to begin with, I gave myself a pep talk to focus on 1 entry at a time and not think about the project as a whole. That if it took a year, or even 2 years, that was fine. And it worked!!! It only took 8 months. I started at the top, with my Approved List, and worked my way down. Every now and then I’d switch over to my huge list of suggested brands that weren’t already on there and look into them and add them where I felt they belonged. There is a date next to each update or addition, and also note if I moved a brand from where they used to be and why. I’m very happy to report that in the update several brands I had noted did not disclose ingredients on their site, but that is almost unheard of now. So that is fantastic, and makes it much easier for me to share my opinion.
Here are the stats: There are 26 brands on my Approved List, 77 on the So-So portion, and 52 on my Not Recommended list, for a total of 155 companies. I still have a long list of brands to look into that are not on there. So this project is not done, it’ll always be a continual work in progress. And I’m really excited to look into those new (to the list) brands, that’s my favorite part. Discovering new brands for my Approved List excites me every, single time! I kinda’ wish I’d kept track of the number of hours I spent on this, but part of me doesn’t want to know either. Some entries go pretty quick. On average I’d say I spend 1/2 hour per entry. The Not Recommended portion is the easiest because most of them are full of icky ingredients and I can click through multiple products quickly and know I definitely don’t recommend them. The Approved entries take the longest because I truly look through almost every product offered to make sure they aren’t sneaking some icky ingredients in here & there. I take my Approved portion very, very seriously and only the very best brands on the market land there. I do feel quite good about the So-So portion, I think it’s great that there are a lot of options that aren’t terrible, many that landed there are making quite a few pretty decent products, just not 100% across the board for me to be able to fully recommend them.
Here is a link to the Master List. You can click on the full listings from there. I’ve had people ask me to make this info into a pamphlet/book. My take on that is this: as soon as something gets written down it runs the risk of becoming inaccurate due to new formulas, etc. And with everyone having phones these days, I feel keeping these lists here is the best way to keep the info readily accessible. I’m 100% okay with these lists being FREE, I do not expect anything for them. I truly enjoy sharing my opinion on what products are great, or not so great. I know many of you are on super tight budgets, like me. But I also know some of you utilize these lists pretty heavily, and maybe aren’t on a super tight budget. All that being said, if you truly value these resources and have a few extra bucks you feel like donating, I would be flattered and appreciative of your donation. I felt like adding those details here is not out of line. My PayPal is: . My Venmo is @Jessica-Brandt-56 (last 4 digits of my are if it asks). And for real, I do NOT expect anything in return for me sharing my thoughts with you.
Using my Affiliate links when you do shop with these brands is 1 way you can give back a little something to me: https://ecofriendlymamausa.com/affiliate-links/
Also, I took a break from working on this project to sneak in a sunscreen recommendations post, which you might also find helpful! There are new (to me) brands on this sunscreen list that I will be looking into for an overall recommendation too! https://ecofriendlymamausa.com//06/15/fun-in-the-sun-my-top-recommendations-what-i-consider-so-so-and-those-i-dont-recommend/
And finally I just want to say, this project is a great analogy for other things in life. Sometimes things feel completely overwhelming. Sometimes it’s okay to not focus on the big picture. Take a step back and tackle one thing, one day, at a time. Baby steps add up to giant leaps & bounds over time. They really do!! I hope everyone is having a great start to your summer. I sure am, and tomorrow my baby girl turns 11!
